How to Make Your Application Stand Out

Looking for a new job can be stressful, especially if you’re not sure where to begin. And even once you’ve narrowed down a few job opportunities, you’ll need to spend some time writing a cover letter and tweaking your resume in the hopes of getting an interview. There are just so many steps to the process.

It might not be easy to make your job application stand out from the crowd, but it’s definitely possible. A little bit of extra energy and effort is well worth it for a job you want!

Here are a few tips for creating a top-notch job application that will highlight your unique selling points–and get you that job!

Use Your Network

You’ve heard it before, and it’s true: The more you can leverage your personal network to help you, the better.

Don’t be shy–ask your friends, family, and acquaintances to see if they know anyone at the company you’re applying for. You can also use university networks, Facebook, or LinkedIn to help you in your search.

Use any connections you have to get your foot in the door. Having a personal connection will make you memorable, and a good word from someone goes a long way in proving you’re a suitable candidate for the job. This article has even more tips on the subject you might find helpful!

Add Keywords to Your Resume

When writing your resume, throwing a few keywords into your application materials can make a big difference. Go through the job posting and highlight some of the standout words, then use that language directly in your resume. This makes it much easier for HR professionals to see that you’re a good match for the position.

It’s also a good idea to apply directly on the company website as opposed to through a job board. It shows you paid enough attention to exploring their webpage and aren’t just applying to any job you see.

Be Authentic

Stay true to yourself throughout the job search process. Only apply for jobs that align with what you want in your next position! Have a vision of what you want to get out of your job, and understand how your skills and talents can help the company achieve its vision, too. Ideally, this should end up as a win-win for everyone involved.

Don’t bother applying for a job just to say you applied, and don’t take a job just for the sake of taking a job. Long-term, you won’t feel satisfied or fulfilled in your position and have to go through the job search process all over again.
