3 Ways to Make Your LinkedIn Profile Help You With Your Job Search

LinkedIn is one of the best and most popular ways to network and find new jobs. It’s also a great way for hiring managers to find you. When your profile fits their criteria, LinkedIn will highlight you as a good candidate for a certain role.

To make sure the right people are finding your LinkedIn profile, it’s a good idea to update the profile to reflect who you are, what you offer, and the types of positions you’re looking for.

Keep it current

If you haven’t had the chance to actually update your profile with your most recent jobs, now is the time to do so! Remember not just to fill out your experience and role descriptions, but the profile summary, too. It’s the perfect opportunity to give a short and sweet elevator pitch to anyone who clicks on your name.

Highlight important accomplishments and roles you’ve had most recently, and be sure to showcase your successes. Mid-job search is not the time to be humble, so go ahead and brag about yourself a little.

Use industry language

Meet employers where they are at and use the industry jargon. Take a peek at some of the job descriptions of roles you might be interested in, and highlight a few key words or phrases that stand out. Then, focus on incorporating that language into your LinkedIn profile.

Different niches will use different wording, but a few keywords to look out for are “leader,” “strategic,” and “innovative.” Sprinkle them throughout your profile and watch what happens!

Highlight the tasks you enjoyed

If you’re passionate about spreadsheets, or you love managing client portfolios, share that in your LinkedIn profile. By conveying your enthusiasm about the roles you enjoy, you’re more likely to catch the eye of a hiring manager and be seen as a strong candidate for positions involving those tasks.

The goal is always to do more of what you love in your future positions, so communicate on LinkedIn what exactly it is you want to be spending your time doing. It’s a win-win–hiring managers will be able to seek out employees interested in their jobs, and you’ll zero in on jobs you’ll enjoy.

Make yourself stand out

LinkedIn is a great place to start your job search and put yourself out there for employers to see. By marketing yourself with a strong profile summary, meaningful keywords, and your detailed aspirations for the future, you’re well on your way to a job–and a career–you’ll love.
